Welcome To The Chess Club

Chess Club (1st-5th Grade)

The Chess Club is a game of strategy and imagination and a tool for building reasoning skills, focus, character and confidence. Research studies have demonstrated the positive impact of chess on academic performance and emotional intelligence. Students receiving chess instruction showed statistically significant gains in reading on a nationally standardized achievement test than did the control group. Evidence also indicates that children develop:

The purpose of this chess club is to learn and play chess while having fun and making friends. The club has a coach who will walk through a mini-lesson at the beginning of each meeting. After the mini-lesson, the students play chess with each other. Chess homework is optional. The coach prepares the mini-lesson, supervises the game-play and actively coaches the students on how to improve their game-play while creating a positive environment for learning. The Ivy Clubhouse is an affiliate club of the United States Chess Federation.

Who Can Join The Chess Club?

Any student in 1st through 5th grade may join. Each section of the Chess Club is limited to 20 members.

 

When Does the Chess Club Meet?

This club meets once a week for 1.5 hours.

Chess Club (section A) for Beginners

meets on Mondays 3:30-5:00

Chess Club (section B) for Beginners

meets on Tuesday 5:00-6:30

Chess Club (section C) for Intermediates

meets on Fridays 3:30-5:00

Chess Club (section D) for Intermediates

meets on Saturday 9:30-11:00

There are three sessions (session 1 is September through November, session 2 is December through February and session 3 is March to May). Each session meets ten times fo 1.5 hours. Students can join for one or more sessions.  The club fee includes mini-lessons, use of chess sets and timers, coach supervision and direction, six-issue subscription to Chess Life and youth membership in the US Chess Foundation, which gives the student the right to earn a chess rating in the official national rating system.

 

Who are the Chess Coaches?

Ryan Leever

This amazing young man captured the New Jersey, Michigan, and Florida State Championships for chess. Ryan has assisted at the Lincoln-Hubbard Chess Club, teaches at summer programs and teaches chess privately.

Joe Fortunato

Joseph is a tournament strength chess player with a United States Chess Federation strength of about 1630. He has studied with grandmasters and international masters. He has studied not only chess literature but also the literature of how to teach chess to children. Currently, Joseph has taught in classroom settings and privately.
