Welcome to The Investment Club
Investment Club / Stock Market Game (4th-5th grade, 6th-8th grade)
The Investment Club allows students to apply skills in math, language arts and social studies to real world financial decision. Ivy Clubhouse uses the Stock Market Game (TM) endorsed by the New York Stock Exchange. Students take part in the following steps:
- Start with $100,000 in virtual cash and learn financial concepts like compound interest and long-term savings.
- Collaborate and research companies and current events.
- Create, manage and analyze their online investment portfolio using a state-of-the-art trading platform by buying and selling stocks.
- Compete for awards based on portfolio value. All students receive a certificate of participation.
- Enter a national essay contest, InvestWrite, focused on the importance of long-term savings and investing (optional).
The club has a coach who will walk through a mini-lesson at the beginning of each meeting on concepts such as:
- Introduction to the Stock Market Game
- What is a company?
- What is a stock?
- Ticker Symbols and Stock Symbols
- What is an Exchange/Market?
- What is diversification?
- What is a bond?
- What is risk?
- What cause stock prices to change?
- How does money grow over time?
- What are dividends and earnings?
After the mini-lesson, students discuss current events which impact the stock market and investment decisions they are considering for their stock market portfolio. Students will use the remainder of the meeting to perform stock market transactions and conduct research. The coach supervises and supports the students during the meeting and creates a positive environment for learning.
Who Can Join the Investment Club?
Any student in 4th through 8th grade can join. Each section of the Investment Club is limited to 20 members.
When Does the Investment Club Meet?
This club meets once a week for 1.5 hours.
Investment Club (A) for 4th-5th graders
meets on Friday 3:30-5:00
Investment Club (B) for 6th-8th graders
meets on Wednesday 5:00-6:30
There are three sessions (session 1 is September through November, session 2 is December through February and session 3 is March to May). Each session meets ten times of 1.5 hours. Students can join for one or more sessions. The club fee includes mini-lessons, coach facilitation and supervision and access to computers for research and portfolio management.
