Debate
Students will learn to debate by being assigned to teams and engaging in one or more debates per class. Topics will be assigned by the instructor; no special knowledge will be required. We will use, primarily, the parliamentary debate format, modified to be appealing to a broad range of students. Students will research and prepare for the debates during class.
Among the goals of debate class are: (a) to develop the student's ability to critically analyze a problem and formulate workable solutions, (b) to enhance the student's argumentation, organizational, listening and note-taking skills and (c) to enable each student to speak persuasively and confidently to an audience.

Improvisational Comedy
Through theater games, students will learn to unleash their flow of creative ideas and emotional energy and learn to push themselves to take risks and be spontaneous, all in a safe and supportive environment. We will begin with skill building exercises -- developing trust in yourself and scene partner, listening and responding, focus and concentration and positive collaboration. We will then move onto techniques for creating comic characters and begin building comic situations and scenes. Students will learn to develop the “who, what, where, when,” say “yes” to their scene partner, be specific in their acting choices, experience their characters’ changes to mix things up and make it funny, take acting choices to a comic extreme, and overall perform with confidence, enthusiasm while having lots of fun.

Watercolor Painting
In this class children will understand how water and pigment mix to create perspective and environment, and simply to understand how the concept of “to do less but get more” works. Children will learn to express themselves by letting colors and water combine to create a picture. They will also better understand the core skills of how to mix basic colors to make new ones, to use different water color brushes for different purposes, and to apply water on paper at the rights spot and right time. But most of all, the goal is to have children coming away from the class enjoying water color painting and being excited to explore more on their own. Check out the watercolor paintings by the art teacher, Joe Lanni on his website (http://www.artbyjoe.net/)
