Debate
Students will learn and participate in various formats of debate events including (1) Lincoln-Douglas, (2) policy, (3) public forum and (4) congressional debate. debate by being assigned to teams and engaging in one or more debates per class. Student will have a choice of debate topics for them to research and prepare during class. Among the goals of debate class are: (a) to develop the student's ability to critically analyze arguments on both sides, (b) to enhance the student's argumentation, organizational, listening and note-taking skills and (c) to enable each student to speak persuasively and confidently to an audience.

Language Arts Boot Camp
Student will attack the Common Core Language Arts standards for 6th and 7th grades. Through exercises, discussions and explanations, students will learn the conventions of English grammar, punctuation, figurative language, structuring our writing and use of key ideas and details.

Brain Training
International Ivy has partnered with a leading provider of brain training to help students who struggle to learn or want to gain a competitive edge. Brain training is a system of highly targeted exercises used to change the brain's capacity to think and learn. Our partner's patented methodology strengthens underlying mental skills like attention and memory, so students learn faster and easier. The course includes an assessment for detecting cognitive strengths and weaknesses and cognitive exercises and games to start the process of brain training.

Creative Writing Workshop 
Student-writers dive into the themes that move or inspire them and through a variety of fun exercises, they will explore the concepts of characterization, setting, visual imagery, voice, plot and more as they create one longer story. Each story will then be workshopped in peer groups, revised and edited. Students will learn about the process of writing and how to organize their ideas which can be leveraged during the school year. Finished stories will be published in a celebratory anthology.

Vocabulary Builder
A strong vocabulary is essential to writing and reading comprehension. In this class, students will play games like charades, pictionary, vocabulary word memory, modified Catch Phrase, Scattergories, Apples to Apples to increase their lexicon. Student will also work on reading comprehension exercies to practice using context clues, study idioms and study prefixes, suffixes and roots.

Toastmasters – Youth Leadership Program
The Youth Leadership Program helps young people build their communication and leadership skills so they may become tomorrow's leaders in business, industry and the community. Participants learn to: (1) overcome nervousness when speaking before an audience, (2) organize and present ideas logically and convincingly, (3) listen carefully to others' ideas, (4) offer advice to help others improve their speaking and leadership skills, (5) participate in - and even lead - group discussion or meetings. Participants increase their self-confidence as they learn.

All classes are week-long, Monday through Friday. Each day, students are in a class for 90 minutes, then take a 30-minute break and return to the same class for 90 minutes. If a student is partipating half-day, the student will take one class, either in the morning OR in the afternoon. If a student is participating full-day, the student will take one class in the morning and one class in the afternoon.
